The engines roared louder, the ship shaking as they pushed harder, lifting the weight of the Ridgerunner. Hall felt the deck shift, the ship lurching, almost knocking everyone down. In the rigging above, the Battleforge brothers and Herj Onyxshard were working to trim the sails. Already at an angle to capture the wind and use it to help push the ship up, they hoped that steepening the angle would catch more of the gusts and provide more uplift.

Hall didn’t understand the mechanics of the use of sails when an airship was moving up. He just knew, had been told, that there was a line where too much of an angle was a negative and would hinder the ship’s upward movement, working against it. He had to trust that the crew knew where that line was.

Looking over the railing, the Rocs seemed to fall further behind.

Their angry screeching could be heard across the sky.

The entire ship shook, making it hard to walk across the deck. Hall could feel the vibrations. It was the other reason why Gerdi hadn’t put the engines at full power before. An airship faced a lot of pressure when traveling up. Gravity pulled down on it, with the ship straining against the force. At full power, the engines had to work three or four times as hard to fight against the pressure. To get the speed, the engines did so much more work. The strain was extreme, which got transferred to the ship.

It was a race to stay ahead of the giant birds.

They appeared to be winning.

The Rocs were falling further behind.

Hall hadn’t flown on many airships post-Glitch, just Hart’s Twisted Gale and Hrothgrav’s Frozen Blade. Both ships were impressive in their own ways, but neither was a match for the Ridgerunner. Corben Battleforge’s design was a work of art. Fast, strong. The ship was amazing.

As the ship shook, the engines rumbled, the distance between them and the Rocs grew. Hall didn’t feel they were safe yet, but he was starting to feel better.

Until he heard the screech from above.

All heads turned, looking up and to the east. Coming down fast, just over the bow, was another Roc. It resembled a giant hawk with blue and black feathers, wings tucked in close as it dove, the shrill sound of it cutting through the sky.

Hall ran toward the fore of the ship, pulling his ironwood spear out of its harness. He wasn’t thinking, just acting on instinct. The Roc came closer; Hall got nearer the end of the ship. He activated Leap and soared into the air. He arced high, meeting the bird head-on. The sharp eyes widened in surprise at the man in its way. Hall stabbed with his spear, hoping for a direct hit on the Roc’s head. He missed, the agile and fast bird banking to the side quickly. The spear cut into its neck, feathers exploding on the impact. The Roc squawked and its flight faltered.

Hall felt wind buffeting him and then a heavy
